Program Description
In this presentation historian Drew Crooks will look at the famous Nisqually leader Chief Leschi and Isaac Stevens, Governor of Washington Territory. He will also discuss the momentous Medicine Creek Council of 1854 that brought the two men together. The resulting Medicine Creek Treaty had important consequences in the 19th century and continues to impact our region and its Native and non-Native inhabitants to the present day.
Speaker
Drew Crooks received a bachelor’s degree in history and anthropology and a master’s degree in museum studies from the University of Washington. For over 35 years he has worked with various museums in South Puget Sound, written numerous articles and five books on the region’s heritage, and presented history talks to school classes and community groups.
