Building Type: Residence
DAHP ID: 489492
Statement Of Significance
According to the Thurston County Assessor’s on-line records, the building, originally a residence, was constructed in 1951 along with many other houses along College Street. Research did not indicate that the property is assoicated with events or persons considered important in local history. The building was converted from a residential use to a commercial use and does not retain integrity of feeling and association. In terms of materials and workmanship, several of the windows have been changed to aluminum sliders; the windows were likely originally wood-framed sash. Other modifications include the removal of a fireplace, and the addition of railed exterior stairs over existing concrete steps on the side of the building. The overall design of the building remains intact. The property is a common example of a ranch style building of the 1950s and 1960s with an overall low profile and rambling appearance. This building is not considered the work of a master architect, nor was it built using innovative construction techniques. The building offers no additional information to our understanding of historic residential areas of the 1950s in the City of Lacey. The building is not located within a historically significant district.
Physical Description
The property, situated on a 0.16-acre lot at 1308 College St, is a symmetrical single-story, wood framed building. The building features a hipped roof with closed eaves and both internally-mounted and exterior-mounted brick chimneys. The exterior is clad with lapped siding and displays wooden single-entry doors (some with diamond pattern glazing). A full-width porch, supported by small square posts, is located on the primary facade. The exterior is mostly intact. Many of the windows have been replaced. Two corrugated aluminum awnings have been added to the front of the building on either side of the entryway. The interior has also been altered to support the change to a commercial function. The Thurston County Assessor’s online records indicate that asphalt paving was added to the property in 1975, likely to create the parking lot behind the building. The buildng originally functioned as a three bedroom, single-family residence at the time of its construction. It has a kitchen at the north end of the building and a fireplace along the south wall of the building as evident from the remaining chimney. It is currently a commercial business called Baby Basics, a consignment store selling baby clothes and accessories. It is possibly that the building was converted to a business in 1975 when the parking lot was created, however that could not be substantiated through the review of available records. According to Thurston County permit records the building was re-roofed in 2002.
